what is subject to change?
Subject to Change started from a simple idea: take materials with real history and rebuild them into something new, considered, and lasting. The fades, the stitching, the breaks—those details lead the design. There’s no agenda to outdo the originals. We want to shape historical materials into pieces that feel honest and comfortable in everyday life.

WHO's BEHIND THIS?
Subject to Change was started by Benjamin Talley Smith in 2025. Ben has been a pioneer in the denim industry. He was featured in a 2023 article by The New York Times titled "The Wizard of Jeans." Ben has made significant contributions to the design and launch of numerous influential denim brands through his atelier, Talley Creative.
-
What's the story with the photos?
Ben loves photography. He often uses a RICOH GR10 to shoot on 35mm film, capturing quick moments and then waiting weeks or months to see the results. This sense of anticipation and hands-on approach is similar to the careful, patient work that goes into making these bags.
-
Where are the bags made?
Each bag is handmade in the Arts District in downtown Los Angeles, California.
-
Why is every bag different?
Each bag is unique, made from a single vintage garment that you won’t find anywhere else. These are one-of-a-kind, super-special archival pieces sourced by Ben from his personal collection. He finds them at the world's best vintage flea markets, stores, and dealers, choosing pieces of historical significance or those that are noticeably modified by a previous owner.
-
What's the origin of the bag design?
These bags combine the practicality of a tote with the vintage aesthetic of a coal miner's bag, featuring the unique body fabric that Ben has sourced. The design is reinforced with a leather-and-metal locking system, and a front cross strap allows quick, easy emptying.
-
Will you make other bag designs?
Yes, a mini version of the current bag is being developed.
-
Do any retail stores carry the bag?
Not today, but we’re sure to find some homes soon.
